This Week In Michigan MMA (Through January 17, 2009)

Detroit’s Joe Louis Fist Photographed by Jess Bournay.

I can’t believe all the stuff that’s going on this weekend around the state. This is definitely the weekend to get out and see some cage fighting, it’s happening everywhere!

We’ve got five amateur events and Michigan’s first PROFESSIONAL MMA event, brought to you by XCC Live. Click the link to see the posters and the details.

Friday Night, XCC 37 – Rumble in Royal Oak is happening at the Royal Oak Music Theater.
Two Championship Bouts, 15 live cage fights.
Matt Flynn VS Greg Ahrens… This has me curious. Some have speculated that it’s Matt’s favorite fighters vs. Greg’s favorite fighters, but what if it’s ACTUALLY Matt in the ring vs. Greg in the ring??? I discount oakley wouldn’t miss THAT for the world.

Gate Opens at 7pm, Pro Weigh-Ins happen at 7:30 for the Jan 16th Pro show. Fights start at 8:30pm. for more information.

Saturday night, XCC is at it again, with XCC 38 – Rumble in Royal Oak 5 at the Royal Oak Music Theater. This is Michigan’s first sanctioned professional MMA event. The poster says that UFC veterans Hermes Franca and Jeremy Stephens will be there.

It’s an all-ages, all-pro event. It’s going to be taped to air on FSDetroit. If you can’t make it out to Royal Oak, it’s going to be available in Pay-Per-View, too. You just don’t want to miss this landmark event! Check the fight poster for more information, or head over to

Also on Saturday night, Ground and Pound Promotions is hosting G.P.P. XI – Killer Instinct at Klackle Orchards in Greenville, MI. According to Ground and Pound’s website Travis Travesty will be up against Joel Vincent for the 135 lb. Interim Belt. It also looks like their 165 lb. title holder, Clay Belka, is vacating his belt to focus on his career in the 155 lb. division. The new contenders for the 165 lb. belts are Steve Summerfield (representing “Tam Apocalypse” out of Ionia) and Steve Wilson (representing “Team Outlaw” out of Lakeview).

And, can I just say that I love getting the fight card ahead of time? I love it so much, and since Ground and Pound has it up on their website, I’m going to reprint it here for you (of course, fight cards are always subject to change, and might not be in the order that the fights will happen, but I think it’s awesome to have an idea of who’s fighting):
